WELCOME TO THE BRISTOL PILOT GIG CLUB WEBSITE

Bristol Gig Club is a relaxed and friendly pilot gig rowing club based in Bristol's historic floating harbour.

A Cornish Pilot Gig is a 6 person (and one cox) rowing boat. Traditionally gigs were rowed along the coast of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly as a way of getting a pilot with local knowledge of the waters to large sailing ships so that they could navigate them safely into land. The first pilot to the ship would gain the much needed commission, and so these boats were built to be fast! The sport of gig racing began officially in Newquay in 1921.

Set up in 2007, the club boasts competitive crews at all levels (men, ladies and veterans),  as well as providing coaching for new members who have never rowed before. We race from May to September, all along the Westcountry coast, and even as far afield as London, Ireland and Holland!
